5 ways stress affects our skin
Stress is something that we all have to deal with on a daily basis but what impact is it having on our skin?
- Dark Circles
Firstly, I’m sure most of you agree that sometimes there feels like there’s not enough hours in the day to get everything done and as a result of this, we are going to sleep later and later to fit everything we possibly can into our day. As well as feeling tired and groggy, lack of sleep causes unsightly dark circles under our eyes! To ensure more restful, brighter looking eyes, try and get your 8 hours beauty sleep. That thing that needs to be done can wait until tomorrow.
2. Premature ageing
Being stressed can make us pull certain facial expressions such as frowning our brow or pursing our lips. STOP! Did you know by doing this on a regular basis can cause permanent deep lines. Although pulling these facial expressions are involuntary, try and be more mindful of what you’re doing with your face because lets face it- you’re going to be even more stressed when you see how lined your face is becoming!
Breakouts and blemishes are not just for teenagers. Stress can have a massive impact on causing unwanted spots as when you are stressed your body releases a hormone called cortisol which tells glands to make more oil. More oil = more spots unfortunately. Keep to a skin care regime that is right for your skin type to help balance any excess oil.
4. Flare ups
If your skin is prone to a skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, roseacea or acne- guess what stress can cause them to flare up! Speak to your doctor for advice as these are medical conditions.
5. Puffy eyes
Lack of sleep results in poor drainage under your eye area causing them to look puffy and even more bad news, if you’re someone who sleeps on your tummy- the drainage is even worse making your eyes puffier and swollen! To combat puffy eyes sleep on your side or back and get more sleep. It’s called beauty sleep for a reason.
These are just 5 things stress does to our skin, imagine the impact it has on the rest of your body. Try and keep relaxed and get plenty of sleep.
